I’ll say this: it was an episode.
The final shake-out looks normal enough, and I think everyone is happy with where they ended up. But the path to get there was ugly. We started two hours late, and at least one pick took over seven minutes to make (granted, it was Kennedy’s three-at-once). In the end, the pacing was perfect. We took our time getting our starters and went rapid fire for our depth. Speed improves the experience, for sure.
I’m just gonna dive right in.
Pick 1 – Antonio Brown, Doak
Had to do it! When you have the best pick, your take the best player. Antonio Brown has finished as the top receiver for four years straight.
Pick 2 – Todd Gurley, Sean
For a while, Todd Gurley was on my list. My passing on him was pure superstition. He’s as likely as anyone to lead all non-QBs in scoring.
Pick 3 – David Johnson, Shelby
“It can’t happen two years in a row!” True story. The Cardinals not only plan to overuse him; they need to overuse him if they want to win. Volume is king.
Pick 4 – Lev Bell, Spencer
There was never another option.
Pick 5 – Dalvin Cook, Brian
There were many other options.
Pick 6 – Zeke, Cam
Rumors are that the Cowboys are planning to get him 500 touches this year.
Pick 7 – Melvin Gordon, Sean
Like Gurley, Gordon is as likely to finish #1 as anyone. Was it worth sacrificing WR?
Pick 8 – Mike Evans, Cam
Ration your liquor, people!
Pick 9 – SAQUON, Corey
My favorite pick of the first round.
Pick 10 – “Lenny”, Tim
I like the love affair brewing between Tim and Fournette. In general, Tim is loyal to his favorite players from year to year, and the recent success suggests this I the way to be.
Pick 11 – DeAndre Hopkins, Evan
Every fucking year we give Evan free elites. It’s unacceptable but apparently unavoidable.
Pick 12 – Aaron Rodgers, Oliver
*face palm emoji*
Aside from the Rodgers reach, this was a quality round. No one did anything stupid. Even the Rodgers reach is reasonable. All he has to do is finish in the top tier of QBs, and it’s a good pick.
Pick 13 – Devonta Freeman, Coleman
Easy pick. Best RB available.
Pick 14 – Ronald Jones, Evan
Bad, bad pick, especially with Julio, AJ, and OBJ available. Jones would have been available a round later.
Pick 15 – Julioooo, Tim
Tim is getting the band back together again. He had Julio two years ago when the Falcons led the league in… offense.
Pick 16/17 – AJ Green and GRONK, Corey
Bahahaha suck it, Cameron.
Pick 18 – OBJ, Cam
Hmmm. Maybe I would have preferred him to get Gronk. Cam’s nucleus at this point is Kamara, Zeke, Evans, OBJ, Tyreek. Which is good because I’m pretty sure he failed to make a worthwhile pick after 18.
Pick 19 – Jordan Howard, Kennedy
Homer pick, but the fantasy expert community loves Howard this year, thinks the Tarik Cohen hype is overblown. Howard has the most guaranteed volume of anyone available at this point, aside from
Pick 20 – Adam Thielen, Brian
Wait, so you reached for Dalvin and then doubled down on the Vikings? Dude, what?
Pick 21 – LeSean McCoy, Spencer
Technically a homer pick. Spe loves the Bills now. McCoy is 30, he’s coming off a season where his efficiency dipped wayyy down, and he’s not Frank Gore. Also, let’s not ignore how a RB’s numbers are buoyed by mobile QBs. With Tyrod gone, McCoy’s cruising for career-lows in everything, as he has too much mileage survive high volume for an entire season.
Pick 22 – Michael Thomas, Corey
Stupid sleeper, but then again, Thomas doesn’t finish THAT high in the points. He never even eclipsed 20 in a game last year. That said, he’s going to explode during Ingram’s suspension.
Pick 23/24/25 – Hilton and Russ and Baldwin, Kennedy
This was almost perfect. I would’ve liked to see Guice over one of the receivers, but with another pick at 30, I guess Kennedy could afford to wait.
Pick 26/27 – Golden Tate and Jay Ajayi, Shelby
These are relatively safe plays, and I respect that. I would’ve liked to see a bigger swing on a back-to-back, going one floor play (Tate or Ajayi) and one ceiling like an Amari Cooper.
Pick 28 – TB12, Spencer
Honestly, I’m so sketched out when it comes to the 40-yo players. I just imagine the arm going noodle in Week 7 and never coming back. I’m also fucking stupefied Spencer didn’t draft Amari Cooper here.
(Side note: for anyone expecting hedge-takes, I’m not into it. Obviously, any of these players could be anything. I don’t have to qualify my takes with “but realistically…” It’s tedious.)
Pick 29 – Marshawn Lynch, Oliver
DERRIUS GUICE IS STILL ON THE BOARD, YOU SAVAGES
Pick 30 – Marvin Jones, Kennedy
Fuck, I love me some Marvin. Did you guys know he scored 4 TDs in one game with Andy Dalton? Dude is a star.
Pick 31 – Sony Michel
Recent news says he’ll be out until Week 3. Conspiracy theory says that drafting Michel was a massive middle finger from Belichick to the future. The talking heads are adamant that there is a plan here for Michel to be utilized heavily because Belichick wouldn’t spend that kind of capital without a plan. I think his plan is to make it look like he’s building when really he’s poisoning the reservoir
Pick 32/33 – Demaryius and Lamar Miller, Oliver
Thomas wasn’t the homer pick I expected. I had Royce Freeman to Oliver at pick 29 or 32. Reminder: Oliver traded Stefon Diggs for the 33rd pick, meaning he traded Diggs for Miller, and I’m going to be clocking that comparison every week.
Pick 34 – Derrius Guice, Tim
Tim, you’re fucking smart. Guice is the starter behind a top-5 offensive line. He has just enough competition to keep him honest but not nearly enough to threaten his workload. Easy, easy top-12 finisher this season. Trade him to me!
Pick 35 – Allen Robinson, Evan
I like Allen Robinson. I think he’s going to finish with 1,000 yards and close to 10 TDs. I also think he’ll finish behind
Pick 36 – Amari Cooper, Coleman
Super sleeper. Cooper could have gone 20 picks earlier, and I wouldn’t have questioned motive. He will be fed the ball close to ten times per game. Volume. Wins.
Pick 37 – Jameis Winston, Brian
And with that, Brian locks up the best QB in the league on a two-year deal.
Pick 38 – Carson Wentz, Evan
Technically, this is as good or better than the Jameis pick. The average sports fan or talking head wouldn’t even compare them, saying Wentz is clearly superior. But this: Carson Wentz is not an accurate quarterback, and his mobility, coupled with the art of surprise, led to a lot of open throws. I don’t believe it will be as easy this season, especially because there will be hesitation to run. Remember, this is a league where Cam Newton won MVP despite completing only 59.8% of passes.
Pick 39 – Greg Olsen, Tim
Tim, you beautiful bastard. This was the perfect pick.
Pick 40 – Larry Fitzgerald, Shelby (traded to Sean)
Let’s ignore for a minute how Shelby and Sean have a bit of an alliance and focus on how well Larry Fitzgerald has aged. He’s probably going to get another 100-catch season, now at age 34. People think because he won’t sign a long-term deal that he’s on his way out, but I wouldn’t be surprised if he kept taking one-year extensions all the way to age 40. The problem is that he’s slow and has to be schemed open, and I’m not sure new OC Mike McCoy can be nearly as effective as Bruce Arians was in that regard. Arians, now retired, might have been the best offensive mind in the game. Larry’s production could realistically bottom out if the Cards use him like a typical X receiver. So I love that Shelby sold him at peak value. All it takes to trade for Fitz is a sexy name, so I expect him to be moved again, realistically before the season starts (maybe to me?).
Pick 41/42 – Deshaun Watson and Rashaad Penny, Coleman
Reeeeeeach! Double reeeeeach! (Okay, to be fair, they’re not reaches because they wouldn’t have made it to his next pick. I just don’t like these guys.)
Pick 43 – Mark Ingram, Oliver
Oliver’s picking his RBs like it’s 2014. Ingram had an amazing year last year, but with realistically six weeks before he has an impact on your roster, it’s a costly stash. But, like the Rodgers pick, if it pays what it’s supposed to, it’s a good deal.
Pick 44 – Brandin Cooks, Brian
Cooks is an interesting case. He has been traded twice in two years, but it isn’t a red flag. The Saints are more satisfied paying Michael Thomas top-receiver money, and the Pats don’t pay anybody. The Rams invested a (likely late) first-rounder and 5-years/80 mil, and we’re drafting this guy a round later? I mean, I get the drop off from Brees/Brady to Goff is scary, so I guess it all adds up. Still, for a guy who finished 7th among WRs, this is value.
Pick 45 – Chris Hogan, Spencer
Reeeeeach…? Before his injury, he was averaging 9.5 ppg, which puts him in league with Thielen, Fitz, and Baldwin, which I guess makes him a value? All I know is that the Pats ruin everything.
Pick 46 – Carlos Hyde, Corey
You can tell by a pick I made later what I think of this one. I don’t envision Carlos Hyde starting. I see this situation playing out just like the Vikings backfield last year. Sign a veteran RB to a multi-year deal, spend a second-rounder on the position, and let them battle. Remember that Nick Chubb was considered the top RB in his class just eight months ago, and all that changed was Sony Michel broke some huge runs in a championship and Saquon tore up the Combine.
Pick 47 – Michael Crabtree, Sean
The value is right. When you crunch the numbers and analyze the talent surrounding him, Michael Crabtree is poised to draw over 150 targets, while being the team’s top red-zone option.
Pick 48 – Tevin Coleman, Oliver
Reach again! But I’ll say this: Coleman will be more than worth keeper status next season when he signs a deal to start for the 49ers. But Doak, Jerick McKinnon just got a massive deal! They can’t pay two RBs that much money. Check the details: after this season, McKinnon is only guaranteed 1.5 million, meaning the 49ers will just fucking cut him unless he sets the world on fire. You just know Shanny wants to get Tevin back in his life. So, average value pick this year pays off huge in 2019. I’m waiting for midseason to trade for Coleman, assuming by that marijuana will have eradicated this key detail from Oliver’s memory.
Pick 49 – Royce Freeman, Doak
There is skepticism over Freeman’s role, but look at the facts: Devontae Booker has had two chances to win the starting job and lost to CJ Anderson, who everyone thinks is trash despite the fact that he rushed for 1,000 yards last season. Royce Freeman is going to win the job and rush for 1,000 yards. What else matters when you haven’t picked in four rounds and all the sure things are gone?
Pick 50 – Pierre Garcon, Sean
I wasn’t sure Garcon would get treated like the starter, in terms of where we collectively valued him. This pick is funny because when I took Garcon 69th last year, Sean said he didn’t like the pick because Garcon was more of a PPR player. Well, phooey, motherfucker. Enjoy your PPR play while I watch Dante Pettis rack up just as many points on half the catches.
Pick 51 – Cam Newton, Corey
I talked shit about Cam’s completion percentage, but Cam Newton has been an exceptional fantasy QB. I think he averages a top-7 finish, so this is perfect value.
Pick 52 – Sammy Watkins, Spencer
Like Brandin Cooks before him, Watkins is another conundrum whose been traded two years in a row, and there are doubts that 16 mil a year automatically makes him the #1 target in that offense. I’ll tell you what, though: the Chiefs have plans that we can’t imagine. It’s going to be super fun, and I like the big swing here for a high-ceiling guy who, if he can catch it in traffic, will probably lead the Chiefs in receptions and TDs.
Pick 53/54 – Drew Brees and Evan Engram, Brian
Yeah, I think these picks should have been made much sooner. Age and Bucs homerism has sunk Brees’s value every year. The best part is that Brian will use him for four games and then bench him for Jameis. The Engram pick is smart, but I think people are ignoring the risk that comes with him. Last season, he saw extremely high volume because he was the Giants best option on offense for most of the year. The returns of Beckham and Shepard, along with the arrival of Saquon, will diminish the high floor, but Engram will still be worth starting every week.
Pick 55 – Delanie Walker, Coleman
Feels like a reaction to the previous pick. Walker’s another one whose age makes me nervous he’ll just stop being able to run and jump halfway through the year, but we don’t draft for halfway through; we draft for the first month, especially in this range.
Pick 56 – Robby Anderson, Oliver
Technically, Anderson is a sleeper, though there are rumors he’s going to get suspended for a couple of games for a DUI or something. Even so, he’s the top receiver, regardless of what you’ve heard or remember about Quincy Enunwa. Last year, Anderson finished between Alshon Jeffery and Davante Adams.
Pick 57 – Jordan Reed, Shelby
I’m curious about where everyone had Reed. If I didn’t have Graham, I would have targeted Reed somewhere in the 8th or 9th, just because he’s susceptible to multiple easy-to-incur injuries, mainly concussions and ankles.
Pick 58 – Emmanuel Sanders, Tim
He’s Golden Tate with a lower price tag. The concern is that he’s an aging receiver in a contract year in a changing offense, competing with a bunch of young dudes for probably the slot job. If he returns punts, he’s a steal in our league.
Pick 59 – Kerryon Johnson, Doak
One of two players I cared about drafting and targeted at this exact pick. Obviously I could have waited, but I think time will validate the reach.
Pick 60 – Bobby Wagner, Coleman
Super pleased we were able to hold off on IDPs until this pick. The bonus is that Wagner will likely score more points than an entire round’s worth of the guys drafted ahead of him. Good LB behind a bad line makes for mega tackle totals.
Pick 61 – Cooper Kupp, Oliver
REACH! My god, why?! There are still fresh ribs and you’re sitting here sucking meat off the bone in the 6th!
Pick 62 – Dion Lewis, Evan
I get why you would team Lewis and Henry, and if one of them wins the job, your team actually improves as a result. But you already had Henry, and you already knew he would win the job. Lewis makes your life difficult because having him forces you to play both of them for like the first month, and the Titans have a rough schedule after Week 1.
Pick 63 – Big Ben, Tim
I like the loyalty, again, and I like the player. I just think you could have gotten him later.
Pick 64 – Lavonte David, Shelby
Yes, yes, yes! Great pick at a great time.
Pick 65 – Nick Chubb, Doak
This is the one pick I’m sour on. As I said, I think Nick Chubb will win the job like Dalvin did in Minnesota last season. I’m sour on the pick because even if Chubb wins the job, he’ll still play for the Browns. My other consideration here was Jamison Crowder, who I felt lacked the lottery-ticket appeal of a second-round rookie RB buoyed by a mobile QB.
Pick 66 – Rex Burkhead, Coleman
Suddenly this is the best pick of the draft, as Burkhead is going to start Week 1 and get the goal-line work.
Pick 67/68 – Kyle Rudolph and Will Fuller V, Oliver
Possibly Oliver’s best pick, if only because of the return he’ll get trading him to Kennedy. (Note: Kennedy says he likes Burton, and I don’t think he’ll mind doubling down on Bears in theory, but in practice it will drive him to move on from Burton in the first month.) I like that Will Fuller gets to put a V on his jersey, but that’s about it.
Pick 69 – Isaiah Crowell, Spencer
I praised the Crow for his entire Browns career. I though he was a special runner. He’s not. He’s definitely good enough to start for the Jets, though, so this might be his best year yet.
Pick 70 – Julian Edelman, Corey
Four games is a long time to wait for a past-his-prime slot receiver coming off a major knee injury without being able to use illegal substances to speed up the process. But at Pick 70… I still would have gone with a Corey Davis or Jam Crowder.
Pick 71 – Luke Kuechly, Sean
Sean gets his guy, and he doesn’t spend a pick in the 30s like he did last year. Growth!
Pick 72/73 – Jimmy G and Jam Crowder, Cam
I love these picks. I don’t think this is the year Jimmy G annihilates opposing defenses—I think that’s next year—but I do think this is the year Crowder finally breaks into the WR1 discussion, albeit from Cam’s bench!
Pick 74 – Andrew Luck, Sean (traded to Shelby)
You may remember about four years ago, I drafted Luck like 5th overall, so I love this pick. His value is only rising. I hope Shelby’s plan is to play matchups with Luck and Cousins, as opposed to picking a starter and riding him.
Pick 75 – Deion Jones, Corey
Among linebackers, Jones has the most range and the best hands. He is a top-tier tackler on a defense that lost its starting nose tackle. He will finish top-5.
Pick 76 – George Kittle, Spencer
I’ve said reach before, but this time I mean it. Kittle probably would have lasted four more rounds. But you get one draft, and sometimes it feels like you have one chance to get your guy. Spencer really like George Kittle. He had the flexibility to spend a little extra, and he did. Whatever gets you a piece of this 49ers offense, take it.
Pick 77 – Marlon Mack, Brian
Homer pick, technically, as Mack played his college ball at USF. We don’t know yet whether Marlon Mack is starting for the Colts, and signs point to them using a committee approach. He’s probably the most complete back on the roster, which should secure him the majority of touches, but a majority of touches split among three backs probably becomes twelve carries and a couple targets per game, so the Colts will need to win games for Mack to be worth starting.
Pick 78 – Reshad Jones, Oliver
This pick squeezed my butthole. I was super nervous this would lead to a run of DBs, and I would lose my chance at Keanu. Jones, by the way, is the top DB by a whole head.
Pick 79 – Joey Bosa, Coleman
I don’t think DLs score enough to justify picking one this early, but Bosa is top-5, and I support Coleman spending a little extra on a guy he really liked.
(Are you sensing the shift in the draft? I know some of you missed it on draft night. The 6th round was the time to stop making safe picks and start swinging.)
Pick 80 – Devin Funchess, Oliver
There are a few problems with Devin Funchess. One, he plays with the least accurate QB in the league. Two, he is essentially a move-TE playing receiver. Three, DJ Moore is an actual receiver who is going to start over Funchess.
Pick 81 – Jags D, Shelby
Shelby went TE, LB, DST with three straight picks and built a solid wing of role players to hold the floor every week.
Pick 82 – Telvin Smith, Tim
I disagree with this pick. I hope Tim forgot he had CJ Mosley because doubling up at LB is a waste of a roster spot.
Pick 83 – Kwon Alexander, Evan
Evan yelled Kwon fucking loudly, and anyone who wasn’t already aware woke up to the fact that kid was wasted.
Pick 84/85 – Sean Lee and Marquise Goodwin, Kennedy
Kennedy already copped to the fact that this was a major reach for Lee, but when you fill your starting lineup by pick 30, and you wait four and a half rounds to go again, you get una poca de gracia. The Goodwin pick was a value, as he’s potentially the top target in SF.
Pick 86 – JJ Watt, Evan
I don’t think Watt is that big a deal anymore, but I don’t know what else you’d do with this pick. He fills the upside criteria you look for here.
Pick 87 – Khalil Mack, Tim
Mack’s holding out of training camp, potentially into the season. If he plays, he’s the best player on the field pretty much every snap, but it only translates to points if he gets to the QB, which is dependent on the Raiders offense having leads and forcing opponents to throw, which I’m not convinced will happen.
Pick 88 – Tarik Cohen, Shelby
Love the player. He’s fast and can catch and return kicks. He returns value in our league even if Howard dominates carries. The tough thing about owning Cohen is similar to owning like a DeSean Jackson. You have to play him every week to get the value because his big games come from big plays, meaning the matchups are meaningless.
Pick 89 – Keanuuuuuu, Doak
Fuck YES! This was the only other player I said I absolutely had to draft.
Pick 90 – Landon Collins, Coleman
Coleman did close to what he did last year, when he went IDPs in rounds 8, 9, and 10, only he moved the picks up to account for the keeper bump.
Pick 91 – Jared Goff, Oliver
Bad, bad pick. Goff overachieved last year, and Oliver drafts him at his ceiling… I will say that I faded all Rams because I believe their flash in the pan dies down this year, early on especially. They’re going to destroy the Raiders Week 1, but then get slapped with a reality club sandwich in the form of three weeks against the Cards, Chargers, and Vikings.
Pick 92 – Justin Tucker, Brian
He got his guy.
Pick 93 – DeSean Jackson, Spencer
Got his guy.
Pick 94 – Patrick Peterson, Corey
Corey got his guy, but his guy doesn’t score fantasy points. Should’ve re-upped Adoree’.
Pick 95 – Philip Rivers, Sean
He averages a top-10 finish for his career, and he’s always drafted at great value.
Pick 96/97 – ASJ and Matt Ryan, Cam
ASJ was a quality pick, so I’m surprised Cam cut him. Matt Ryan is probably a steal here, such a steal that I think Sean should’ve taken him over Rivers. I don’t even like Matt Ryan. I just think this is the year he essentially calls his own plays.
Pick 98 – CJ Anderson, Sean
You just never learn. I’m kind of kidding. I think the buzz about Anderson leading McCaffrey in carries is real, and Anderson will definitely vulture the goal line carries.
Pick 99 – Calvin Ridley, Corey
Decent price to pay for this year’s Cooper Kupp.
Pick 100 – Alec Ogletree, Spencer
Way too much to pay with all the LB talent still on the board.
Pick 101 – Barry Church, Brian
I don’t get this at all. Church had one season (in Dallas) as a top scorer, and he’s been consistently finishing in the 15-20 range since. Not worth a draft pick, in my opinion.
Pick 102 – Kenny Stills, Oliver
Finally a good pick again. Stills is probably going to lead the Dolphins in targets and TDs.
Pick 103 – Gostkowski, Coleman
Approved.
Pick 104 – Brandon Marshall, Cam
Tilt pick. Pretty sure Cam thought he was getting Gost here and panicked. For those keeping score at home, this was the moment Cam’s draft went off the rails.
Pick 105 – Randall Cobb, Shelby
In theory, I like this pick. Cobb has proven to be a reliable target. My issue is that Cobb is injured. Granted, I don’t think we knew he was injured. And this is a guy who misses games almost every year. He’s another one who you just never know when to play, and his big weeks just aren’t big enough. He’s bye-week filler that always ends up eating up a bench spot. Better pick would have been
Pick 106 – Jordy Nelson, Tim
Two important things: Aaron Rodgers is PISSED the Packers let Nelson go, and Nelson has a chip on his shoulder, going into a situation where the head coach/playcaller fucking loves him. This is a steal for that first month of the season for sure, with potential to extend all year.
Pick 107 – Rams D, Evan
Whatever. Wade Phillips and a bunch of 1-year deals for aging vets. Aaron Donald is holding out, and he’s the Rams’ best hope of putting pressure on the QB. If they fail to put pressure on the QB, even the elite secondary of Joyner, Talib, Peters, and Johnson cannot be expected to hold coverage.
Pick 108 – Calais Campbell, Kennedy
A little early, but otherwise okay.
I break here because we’re entering the tenth round, where the right picks basically double their value so long as you remain patient with them.
Pick 109 – Ty Montgomery, Oliver
I would have liked to see a bigger splash. Ty Montgomery is a total wild card, and all signs suggest he’s no longer even in consideration for the starting job. What’s especially weird is that I would’ve probably taken Giovani Bernard here.
Pick 110 – Peyton Barber, Evan
I’ve rewatched all the Bucs games from last year. While Barber pushed the pile and everything, he didn’t show any potential for breakaway runs. Even his 34-yard scamper—one of my favorite football terms—against Carolina was just bad defense. Ronald Jones’ speed would have gotten a TD.
While I’m thinking of it, let’s talk about awesome football terms.
Some of my favorites:
(the classic) INT for a TD called a “pick six”
Referring to the pro ball as “the duke”
When an announcer says the ball-carrier goes “into the arms of” a tackler
“Wiggle” as a synonym for agility
Referring to strong, heavy LBs and RBs as “thumpers”
Referring to a throw that floats too long as a “duck”
Describing a made field goal as “true”
And of course, “eating the W”
I’m sure there are more, but scamper, duck, and the duke are my favorites right now, right up there with referring to home runs as “dingers.” I will also miss “Gruden’s Grinders” being a thinly veiled excuse to highlight the hardest working white guy on the field.
Pick 111 – Chris Thompson, Tim
Locking up the Redskins backfield is… a choice. With Alex Smith at QB, we can assume both an offense that skews run and an above-average amount of check-downs to the RB, but can you justify starting both in a given week?
Pick 112 – Nelson Agholor, Shelby It’s the right kind of pick. My concern is that Agholor did most of his damage
in the span of about five weeks and then fell off. With Mike Wallace coming in, Agholor has too much competition for the type of targets that brought him success last season.
Pick 113 – Lamar Jackson, Doak
Dump the haterade. I’m basking in this pick. At worst, I have a cheap keeper who will project as a top-5 QB in 2019. At best, I have a top-5 QB now.
Pick 114 – Corey Davis, Coleman
This is the pick that the previous ten people to draft a WR needed to make.
Pick 115 – Duke Johnson, Oliver
If I’m being entirely logical, Duke Johnson is the only Browns RB worth a weekly start, as his role is his alone, and the Browns project to play from behind, thus utilizing a pass-catching RB more often than a thumper. Duke has the size to thump, if necessary.
Pick 116 – Aaron Jones, Brian
He’s the best RB the Packers have, but timing is an issue. The 2-game suspension could cost him his role. Jamaal Williams will start and play first, second, and short-distance, while Montgomery plays thirds and probably goal line. An underreported trend in goal line strategy is the use of a versatile back in lieu of a one-dimensional thumper. As far as Jones goes, he won’t have enough opportunity to be worth a roster spot until either Williams or Montgomery falters.
Pick 117 – Patrick Mahomes, Spencer
Technically, this is probably the pick I should have made. Mahomes has decent wheels, and he’s a much better passer than Lamar Jackson. Honestly, I probably fucked up.
Pick 118 – Latavius Murray, Corey
My read on the Vikings offense is that they’ll give Murray plenty to do. It shouldn’t be enough to make Murray “valuable,” but it’s definitely enough to stash him and potentially start him in a pinch.
Pick 119 – Greg Z, Sean
Like Gurley, Legatron is as likely to lead his position in points as anyone.
Pick 120/121 – Vikes D and Donta Hightower, Cam
The Vikings are a quality pick. They are the best defense in the NFC, and they got better by adding Sheldon Richardson in the trenches. Donta Hightower is a trash asset, which is why Cam already dumped him.
Pick 122 – Wil Lutz, Shelby
Another great kicker pick. Get a kicker who plays on a high-scoring offense, people. That’s all you do.
Pick 123 – Jadeveon Clowney, Corey
He’s not practicing yet, but he really doesn’t need to. Last season, he barely practiced at all, and he led DLs in scoring for most, if not all, of the year.
Pick 124 – OJ Howard, Spencer
Technically a strong keeper candidate, it’ll be interesting to see if Spencer can justify locking up a roster spot with an extra TE when Mahomes is the clearly superior keeper candidate and George Kittle projects to have more predictable volume.
Pick 125 – Aaron Donald, Brian
Aaron Donald is holding out, and he’s unlikely to get a new contract from the Rams. He wasn’t worth this pick even if he was practicing. He doesn’t get enough sacks or tackles. If we awarded points for QB pressures (which I want to, but ESPN isn’t about it), Donald would be a viable option.
Pick 126 – Matt Breida, Oliver
Reeeeach. This pick was voided anyway, as Oliver drafted too many RBs.
Pick 127 – Eagles D, Coleman
Strong pick on paper. I’m wholly unconvinced Philly will even make the playoffs.
Pick 128 – Marqise Lee, Doak
He is the #1 receiver, and when he was in college, he was the absolute best in his class. If he can just secure #1 volume, to the tune of 120 targets, he’ll likely still warm my bench as I start my two stud receivers and opt to flex one of my rookie RBs.
Pick 129 - Harrison Smith, Sean
Excellent value for a top-10 DB.
Pick 130 – Texans D, Tim
Watt, Clowney, McKinney, Mathieu, and then some make this a strong pick on paper. This defense has yet to stay healthy under Bill O’Brien, and this year is no outlier.
Pick 131 – Chargers D, Evan
I get it. One of the LA defenses is going to be good. Or not.
Pick 132/133 – Trey Burton and Giovani Bernard, Kennedy
The Burton pick is fine. High upside, for sure. Bernard is the focus here, though, as he has a clearly defined role this year, and he is going to sign a good deal next summer, perhaps to stay in Cincy like Duke stayed in Cleveland, but there’s a sneaky chance he leaves to become a starter for Houston, Miami, Oakland, or the Jetes. Maybe even Buffalo. Whatever. The point is that Bernard is someone you hold unless you’re getting good value back.
Pick 134 – Robert Woods, Evan
Loyalty pick. Woods blew up a couple times last year, but he’s more or less losing his starting job this year, and he’s had trouble staying on the field anyway.
Pick 135 – Matt Bryant, “Tim” (Max picking)
High-scoring offense, check. Dome, check. Hall of Fame bound, check.

I don’t think you had any competition for this pick. Could’ve gotten him in free agency after.

R is for rookie, and rookie is for me. I like that Hines is fast and will probably play on passing downs and return punts and kicks. I like more that (Colts coach) Frank Reich envisions Hines as his new Darren Sproles.

I thought I could last until preseason Week 3 before giving Parker the ax, but I just deplore his lack of upside. At best, he’s the top receiver for one of the league’s least accurate QB. And I don’t want to root for the Dolphins if I don’t have to. What a waste.

This pick is as vanilla as the skin on either of these guys.

You made the pick, now you have to hold on until he signs. If he doesn’t sign by Week 1, trash him.

Hate it to bits. Hurns benefitted from a weird year in Jacksonville when they were losing every game but Blake Bortles was throwing for like 200 yards every fourth quarter. Maybe it means Hurns is part of the unheralded elite. Maybe it means fluke city. Either way, it’s a low-risk pick, and you’re potentially getting a #1 target, albeit in a super shitty pass offense.
Pick 144/145 – Antonio Gates and James White, Cam
This was past the point of no return for Cam, who failed to remember he had back to back picks multiple times. Gates was obviously (forgive me, PC police) retarded, and the James White pick was unnecessary, as no one else was going to make it.
Pick 146 – Theo Riddick, Shelby
This is… fine. I think the only way Shelby uses him is if her season goes terribly.
Pick 147 – Bilal Powell, Corey
This was Max’s guy from like Round 5 on. I have no idea what anyone sees in Powell, who has played well enough to win the Jets job, yet the team refuses to give it to him. Maybe this is the year at age 29?
Pick 148 – Darren Sproles, Spencer
This is what you might call an honorary pick, and Spencer already cut him, but I see Sproles being fantasy viable. He will probably return punts again and work in the two-minute offense, in addition to passing-down work and some sneaky goal line stuff. Wouldn’t be surprised if Spencer found a way to get him back.
(Note: do not acquire Sproles with the hopes Spencer will trade you something. That’s not happening.)
Pick 149 – Kelvin Benjamin, Brian
It’s great value for an undisputed #1, no matter the offense. I faded the fuck out of Benjamin to the point where I kind of forgot he existed. But then that article on ESPN came out, the one where Benjamin regretted being drafted by the Panthers, his reasoning being that Cam Newton isn’t a real QB. Now I’m super jealous and regretting my Parker pick even more.

Kennedy is loaded with potential late-value keepers. Shepard is a dark horse WR2, while Clement is probably just a stash at this point. He had a big SB, but it’s a crowded offense where predictability is the opposite of the goal. Clement will have to take the job from Ajayi to be worth a spot in your lineup. Likely, you’ll fatigue and drop him, giving someone else a cheap starter next season.
Look, I get that the math doesn’t work on how many guys I think are going to be keepers next year. I understand that I overemphasize the prospect. Just… let me.
Pick 158 – Cam Meredith, Evan
Big if it works. The thing about New Orleans is you have to get on the field early, or they’ll forget about you. Meredith has to beat out rookie Tre’Quan Smith, which I’m sure sounds like a given, but since none of us know anything about Tre’Quan Smith, it would be wise to wait and see. Meredith had a mini-breakout with Matt Barkley in Chicago, and the Saints gave him like 10 mil to come play with Brees, so it should work out.

Tim, forgive me. Really, it seemed like a good idea to give him the responsibility at the time.
Pick 160 – Melvin Ingram, Sean
Sean thought Ingram had DL eligibility again, but he doesn’t, so this pick got swapped for Cam Jordan, who is elite. You fuckers with your Campbells and Donalds are going to feel sooo dumb.

I’m stoked on this pick. First, he’s been named a starter. Second, his trade value is astronomical in our league.

I’m pretty curious to see how much the Bills look like they did last year, considering all of the players know the team has gotten worse.

I feel like this was the moment Corey decided the draft was over.

It looks like a good pick because the Redskins went after him and gave him a multi-year deal, but realistically you’ll never take the opportunity to play him.

Garbage on top of garbage. Flowers won’t get enough tackles, and Bailey was only good when the Cowboys offense was good, at a time clearly labeled “The Past.”
Pick 170 – LeGarrette Blount, Sean
Somebody had to do it. The Lions offense is the lowest-key top-10 offense, and we should all be grabbing for pieces. Luke Willson and Matt Prater are available. For Blount, people are defaulting to chalk takes, predicting he’ll get carries on early downs, short distances, and whenever the Lions are trying to run the clock out. The thing about the Lions is they don’t really blow people out, so that third scenario is a unicorn, and the first two are going to Kerryon Johnson unless Kerryon Johnson doesn’t perform well in them. I’m serious when I say that Kerryon Johnson was drafted to replace all other back the Lions have. When the dust settles, I think it’s going to be Kerryon doing most everything, with Blount vulturing TDs and Riddick playing exclusively on 3rd and longs and any time the OC feels compelled to “keep the defense on their toes” by putting Riddick in on an early down in shotgun and calling a zone run.
Pick 171 – Marcus Mariota, Corey
Okay, I was wrong about Corey checking out. Mariota is a clutch pick, and he’s going to bounce way back this season, to the point where he’ll probably beat out Cam Newton late in the season.
Pick 172 – JPP, Spencer
So he’s not the elite pass rusher that available bodies like Cam Jordan or Demarcus Lawrence are. He’s entering a situation where he could very well do Simeon Rice shit and post his best season to date in our defense.

Cam tried to draft at least three other players before I was like, “Hey, you can have Braxton Berrios,” and he was like, “Yeah, whatever.” Mr. Irrelevant, ladies and gentleman.
This was way more than what was necessary. I feel like you guys might have wanted the draft diary I may or may not have mentioned prior to the draft. Things got out of control, and I did not give myself the opportunity to play journalist on this one.
I think a few things are clear: Cameron had the worst draft, but Oliver drafted the worst team, which is fair because he was frankly way too busy writing names to keep up with who he wanted at each pick.
I was going to save this part until next week, but fuck it. Let’s grade drafts. As a former teacher, I understand that a grade should be based on a rubric of criteria. I’m not some ESPN paper-pusher writing A- or C+ based on whether or not I want a particular fan-base to eviscerate me on Twitter.
